The Journey To Becoming A Well-Paid, Full-Time Copywriter
Before ever being paid to put words in a Doc, a lot of us copywriters were 9-to-5ers, blue collar workers, and minimum-wage “brokies.”
Go back to 2017 and that’s exactly where I was…
I’d wake up every morning to an alarm blaring. Blue light from my phone violating my retinas. Aggressively being pulled into reality from the fading memories of a dream.
Shower. Breakfast. Rush out the door.
Ready for another day of being a cog in the machine of society.
2-hour commute to the office. Punch in. Head down. Punch out. Hour-long commute back home.
A life I’d be embarrassed to share if I crossed anyone from my graduating class on the street. But hey. A paycheque’s a paycheque, right?
Maybe for some people. But deep down, I knew that I couldn’t live like this for the next 45 years of my life. I wasn’t willing to tolerate it.
That’s when I came across a little thing called copywriting.
I won’t bore you with the details, but within a year, I did finally earn my first few bucks from writing words.
And even though earning $55 for writing an article felt amazing…
It certainly wasn’t enough to replace my full-time income. Heck, the whole project, with research, writing, and editing, took me like 5 hours. So I was really only earning $11 per hour – only a bit more than minimum wage.
By this point, I was earning enough to justify a few extra purchases here and there, but not enough to leave my 9-to-5.Â
I knew I wanted to write copy for a living, but I knew I had to find a better way of finding paid work.
I Still Had So Many Unanswered Questions
Working 9-to-5. Freelance writing at night and on weekends. And still struggling to figure out the next step.
I needed to find a way to create a consistent, full-time income from copywriting. But there was no clear, direct path…
A year of low paying gigs had gone by and I still had no idea what I was doing.
Where do I find better clients?
What should I say to them?
How can I convince them to work with me when I don’t have a ton of experience?
I was frustrated. And I couldn’t find the answers anywhere.
When I looked online, I’d see the same advice that I still see online today…
“Send 100 cold emails a day!”
“Apply to every single job you see on Upwork!”
“DM all the business owners you come across on Instagram with this template!”
And, I’m sorry, because I know this is going to make me sound like the world’s biggest a-hole…
But the people who preach strategies like that usually haven’t written copy for many people themselves and started their career by selling a course for $497…Â

Blast out templated messages to strangers? Tell them their copy sucks and that I, who know nothing about their business, can make it better? Then spam them with follow-ups until they tell me to piss off?
There’s no way you can convince me that works.

But that’s what everyone’s teaching. So what choice did I have?
Then One Day, Fate Struck...
At my day job (as an auditor for the local government… thrilling, I know!) I sat down to eat lunch with my friend and coworker as I did pretty much every day. For privacy reasons, let’s call her Mary.Â
Just like me, she also had bigger dreams. She loved food. She loved people. She wanted to make the world a better place. And to do that, her goal was to launch a vegan takeaway business – a convenient, healthy alternative to fast food that tasted great.
I thought it was a pretty cool idea.
So I listened.
And she told me everything. She painted the most fantastic picture of what her success would look like. And I kept asking questions.
Eventually, the conversation turned to advertising. She showed me some leaflets she was working on.Â
My copywriting brain kicked into gear.Â
I told her how she could probably improve them.Â
Then the conversation… escalated.
Within a few minutes, the small piece of value I’d given her about writing leaflets snowballed into a wider conversation about social media posts, her website, and even helping her finish off the copy she’d tried writing herself.
Then the unexpected offer came…
“Alex, if I paid you, would you be able to help me with this stuff?”
YES. YES I WOULD.
And we settled on more than $300 – more than I’d ever been paid for a single project up to that point.
But more importantly, I realized something…
I Could Repeat What I Just Did With Mary Online And Find a TON Of Higher Paying Clients...
Of course there was more to it than I can get across in just one story, but the point remains…
I never expected I could get a big payday just because I listened sincerely to someone…
But here I was. Getting a big payday. Just because I listened to someone.
And little did I know there were MUCH bigger paydays to come once I had optimized my new process.Â
Sure, this experience was easy-mode for me because Mary was already my friend. But I still landed her as a client.Â
And crucially, this was after she’d been approached by other freelancers in the past who wanted to work with her.
Freelancers who would come in begging, with a hardcore sales pitch, and massive promises.
She rejected all of them.
And despite me knowing her in person, it’s pretty obvious that if I had approached her with a direct sales pitch and toxic-alpha attitude, she would have rejected me too.
But instead, I was walking away with the cash.
So what made me stand out?
I was different to everyone else – because I didn’t try to pitch her the way all the other freelancers had.
And what I said was relevant to her worries and desires – because I took the time to figure out what she wanted, and when I saw an opportunity to help, I offered my services in a way that could get her closer to her goals.

Yes there was A LOT more I needed to learn to get the process right…Â
But darn… I soon worked out how to get high paying work super reliably.Â
